1.10 — Auarus maximam cupiditatem amat

NotationDate10th c.
TypeSankt Gallen
NotesThe strokes of the text and neumes are comparable in thickness and were probably added by the same hand. The construction of the signs, which are restricted in range, becomes gradually less regular through the extract to the extent that by the third stanza the angle and size of the virga (1a) varies widely.

MelodyThe indicated melody is almost identical between strophes. The accented syllable before the caesura receives the first melodic elaboration of the line - in lines one and two a pes (2a), in line three of strophe one only a virga strata (2V). The mid-point of the strophe is marked by the most extended melodic movement, a climacus (3b). Due to the paucity of melodic information, no pattern for the treatment of the supernumerary syllables in line one can be discerned.
