The Text Menu
The Edition Panel
At the beginning the display presents the critical edition of the texts and, if necessary, their different forms or historical versions,
which may be compared by clicking the synopsis button.
hovering over the single strophe you can view the relevant apparatuses in different frames: sources, loci paralleli in contemporary texts, and the afterlife of some passages.
Secondary panels are:
-
General, where the text is classified according to the usual data: author, date, provenance, ICL number, total number of manuscripts,
manuscripts not utilised in previous editions, and number of versions.
-
Introduction presents the editor's introduction and, where there is one, the stemma codicum with
"sensitive" manuscript sigla: by clicking them a window opens, in which you can read the manuscript's transcription.
-
Complete presents the complete edition.
-
Verses presents the rhythmical data according to different analysis grids:
- the verse and strophe schemas are analyzed first according to Norberg's criteria;
- then they are analyzed according to STM criteria devised by Edoardo D'Angelo (Univ. di Napoli Suor Orsola Benincasa) and explained
in the volume Poetry of early medieval Europe (2003) and in the table that you can consult in the Tables Menu;
- absence or presence of hiatus, elision, aphaeresis, rhyme, synaeresis, hypometric or hypermetric verse etc. (data compiled by Carlos Pérez González, Univ. of Burgos).
-
Language: presents the linguistic data divided into searchable fields. These fields allow comparison with classical grammar and are:
Phonetics (consonants and vocalism) - Accentuation - Morphology - Syntax - Lexicon and Phraseology. Each of these has its own subdivisions
applied according to Peter Stotz's manual of medieval Latin. These archives have been collected by David Vitali (Zürich-München)
and Lucie Dolezalova (Univ. of Praha). Additonal fields of observation have been suggested by Michel Banniard and integrated by Francesco Stella,
namely Subject-Verb Separation or Relative prepositional frequency. Such data were compiled by Francesca Sivo (Univ. of Foggia)
and Nadia Togni (Univ. of Geneva), reviewed by Claudia Cenni (Univ. of Bologna) and Patrizia Stoppacci and Pierluigi Licciardello (Univ. of Siena in Arezzo)
and are synthesized in a separate table of Statistics.
The Panel Manuscript Tradition and Music
The panel opens with the list of the manuscripts that transmit the text. After having selected the line you can get:
-
the sub-panel Manuscripts which allows the palaeographic data of each codex to be retrieved (see chapter The manuscripts menu);
by clicking on each folio of the frame Images you can get
the photographic reproduction of the folios of the manuscripts; the images, in b/w or color, have been provided by the libraries and prepared by Cristina Cartocci;
-
the Transcript of the text: it is presented either in a version provided with diacritical marks, which are described in the Transcription rules,
or in a more easily readable version (with hidden diacritical marks) that you can view clicking on the Half-Diplomatic Transcript button.
-
the manuscript versions provided with music (marked by the symbol ) have a further page Music, comprising:
- information about notations and melody (Notation tab);
- a transcription of the neumes and an alphanumeric transcription, according to Sam Barrett's system (see Neumes table),
which converts the musical symbols in letters and numbers, so that they can be read by the computer and searched through the Search function;
- the historical or creative transcriptions produced by musicologists in XIX and XX centuries:
to these transcriptions are linked audio recordings, which are performed by the Laus cordis choir,
directed by Kim Eun Ju under the supervision of Giacomo Baroffio (Historical Transcripts button).
Conclusions
The text archives allow consultation of seven different forms of the selected text in separate windows:
- photographic reproduction of the manuscript;
- transcript of the text;
- philological reconstruction;
- transcription of the neumes;
- alphanumeric transcription;
- musical transcription on five-line staff;
- modern vocal performance.
The Manuscript Menu
The panel gives information about the shelfmark, origin, dating, size, support, typology of use and layout, scripts, and the
reproduction of the current folio containing the poem, as well as the names of the scholars who are responsible for the collation.
These data have been collected by Patrizia Stoppacci.
The Studies frame presents a bibliography for each manuscript and lists the titles quoted in the introductions to the editions.
The Texts frame includes a list of the texts and allows the pertinent photographic reproduction to be accessed.
Query
The query allows any element in the entire database to be searched for in any combination.
For example, it is possible to search for "texts of 9th century which contain hiatus and are of Italian origin" or
"texts where a certain melodic sequence occurs associated with a precise rhythmical scheme" or "texts in which exchanges b/v appear" and so on.
The selection criteria are distributed in four panels:
- general data;
- data about manuscripts;
- data about texts;
- data about music.
Within these criteria, where necessary, other choices can be made: in particular, under the Text search
you can make a Search for words in the texts (either editions or transcripts) and a Search in the apparatuses.
As you insert the selection criteria these appear in a specific frame, so that we can control the requested combination.
After having submitted a search the results will appear in a window. They will be split into three panels:
- Songs: clicking on a line opens the pertinent Text file;
- Manuscripts: clicking on a line opens the pertinent Manuscript File;
- Texts: clicking on a line opens the pertinent transcription.
Word Search
The panel
about texts allows the possibility of searching for (combining this with other criteria) even the presence of single words or groups of words inside
the texts and the intertextual apparatuses. The subpanels are:
- Verbal search about texts.
- Verbal search in the intertextual apparatuses.
The search can be made in one or more data fields.
The main criteria and options of the verbal search are described in the panels.
Further information provided about the ways of operating concerns the standardization between:
- capitals and minuscules;
- V and U;
- I and J;
- Æ and AE;
- & and ET;
- Ó and O;
- XRIST and CHRIST;
- letters with diacritical marks (accents, Umlaut etc.) and without.
This means that it doesn't matter which of the two forms has been entered in the box:
for example Dümmler can be find by digitizing Dummler or Dümmler.
Only the ę character is searched for specifically.
To represent it, please type _e or è.
Concordances
This function provides the list of the words included in the texts. The selection criteria are:
- all editions;
- one edition;
- all transcripts;
- one transcript;
- only words which contain a key (beginning, final, whichever position).
The results can be sorted:
- alphabetically;
- by growing frequency;
- by decreasing frequency.
Clicking on a single word one gets the short context (verse) with an indication of the poem's number and, if the transcripts have been selected,
the siglum of the codex. The occurrence number is highlighted. By clicking on the line the complete text opens.
Statistics
In this page are collected the stastitical data concerning Subject/verb or Noun/adjective distance,
the frequency and position of the prepositions, and the relationship between the subject/object or complement groups.
These data have been calculated by Francesca Sivo (Univ. of Foggia) and Nadia Togni (Univ. of Geneva), and reviewed by Claudia Cenni (Univ. of Bologna) and Patrizia Stoppacci (Univ. of Siena at Arezzo).
Text editions could be freely ordered, according to the increasing (
) or decreasing (
) value related to each of the calculated indices.
For such purpose, click on the header of the selected columns (which is highlighted in light blue). With another click you can restore the previous order.
